All About Golden Retrievers

Tim Shank May 28, 2017

Retrievers are often noted for their intelligence and their friendly behavior, and the Golden retriever is certainly no different. They are also one of the more popular breeds of dogs in the United States and the tolerance that they display toward all family members makes them a wonderful pet. They are also intelligent, active and do a fantastic as a working dog as well. They have been known to do many different jobs, from helping hunters retrieve game all the way to sniffing out drugs at the airport.

The breed of Golden retriever was first recognized by The Kennel Club in England in 1911. They were classified as yellow or golden but, by the time 1920 rolled around, they were provided with an official name of Golden retriever. They were a breed developed by Lord Tweedmouth to be both a companion dog and a retriever that would be able to work alone with him and his passion as a waterfowl hunter.

The personality of the Golden retriever is where the breed really shines. As a working animal, they were bred to be with humans and to assist them in a number of different ways. This breeding comes through nicely when they are a family dog, because they work along with the family and are quick to make all of the family members happy. Their disposition makes them a good choice for a family with children and with other pets. They should be socialized from an early age because it helps them to grow up as a happy and healthy animal.

Certain health problems are more commonly seen in Golden retrievers, although it is not going to be a problem for every animal. Hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia are two of the more common issues that may be experienced. These are problems with the joints that are genetic and they can lead to pain and a difficulty getting around. Having the dog tested for hip dysplasia is an important part of ensuring that they are as free of the problem as possible. They may also experience certain eye problems, such as progressive retinal atrophy and cataracts.

Golden retrievers tend to be rather active animals and they will absolutely love getting outside and running around in the yard for a while. It is best to ensure that they are given exercise on a daily basis, regardless of whether it is walking around the block or playing a nice game of fetch. You may be able to tire a Golden out with 30 minutes of exercise and it helps to keep them happy and satisfied when they are inside of the home. Golden retrievers tend to enjoy having something in their mouth so provide them with soft toys, a ball or something else that helps to keep them satisfied.

You can choose a golden retriever as a very nice breed of dog for various working needs but they will always fit in well with the family. As long as you give them plenty of attention, they will provide you with a lot of affection in return.
