Which Dog Collar Should You Use?

Tim Shank November 16, 2017

From the time our dogs are very young, it is important to ensure that they are listening to us when we speak. In fact, dogs are capable of going through basic obedience training from the time they are only a few months old. It is a pleasure to take a dog through such a course and regardless of whether you are doing it at home or if you are doing it with a professional, it is something that can result in an obedient and pleasurable companion.

One of the benefits of obedience training for dogs is the fact that it does not take much to do so. Yes, you are going to need to put forth the time and effort in order to train the animal properly but aside from that, the equipment that is necessary is limited, at best. In fact, one of the only pieces of equipment that you will likely need during the training process is the dog collar. How can you make the right choice in this regard?

One of the most important things to consider when choosing a dog collar is the dog itself. Sometimes, you may have a dog that is naturally comfortable on a walk and will not necessarily be going out front, pulling on the end of the lead and trying to get a few extra inches in front of you. If that is the case, a simple collar is all that is necessary and it can be perfectly fine for both training and for everyday use.

A slip collar is another option that may be considered. This is a type of training collar that typically has the lead attached and it is a tool that is good for correcting any type of behavior problems while they are being trained. If your dog tends to get distracted easily, you can give a firm tug on the leash and it will snag your dog’s attention very quickly. It isn’t cruel to give this type of correction. In fact, it can help your dog to pay attention to you and may just save his life.

A pack leader collar is another option that you may consider, especially if you have had difficulties with a standard slip collar. It is a type of collar that tends to stay on securely and when you use it properly, it can help to guide the dog to listen to you more thoroughly.

Another option that you may want to consider if you do want the dog to pull you in some way or another is a harness. This type of collar is also good for dogs that may have restricted breathing problems, including those with short noses or throat difficulties. It puts more of the pressure on the area of the shoulders and chest rather than directly on the neck.

As you can see, there are a number of different options available. Choosing the right dog collar can go a long way in helping both you and your dog to be happy while walking and training.
