All about Pembroke Welsh Corgis

Tim Shank July 29, 2017

One of the more popular dogs in the United States is the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. When you are familiar with one of these dogs, it is easy to see why they have reached such a height of popularity. Originally, they were a herding dog that was used for horses, cattle and sheep. Today, they can also be used for that purpose but more than likely, you will find them in the home as a loyal family companion. They are intelligent, active and a welcome part of any household.

As the name would suggest, the Pembroke Welsh corgi first originated in Pembrokeshire, Wales. It is not fully known what dogs were used to breed the Welsh corgi but legend states that they come from fairies and elves. That being said, it is also thought that they may come from Swedish cattle dogs that the Vikings brought to Wales about a millennia ago. Farmers originally used the dogs for herding purposes but they eventually worked their way into the home.

There is plenty of personality to go around in Pembrokes and they tend to be a welcome part of any family, including those with very young children. They are loving, happy and intelligent but you do need to be careful because they can be stubborn at times as well. The Pembroke Welsh corgi does well when they are thinking for themselves but they can be trained easily. These two factors can go along with each other quite nicely when you train them with that in mind. They also tend to be suspicious of people they don’t know so they will alert you if something unusual is taking place.

Various issues can occur with the health of the Pembroke Welsh corgi, including hip dysplasia and von Willebrand disease. These are issues that can be avoided for the most part by choosing a good breeder and understanding the family line. Epilepsy and spinal disc disease may also be problems in this breed of dog.

Since the Pembroke Welsh corgi was bred to herd animals, they will need to have plenty of exercise every day. They are athletic animals, which can be very entertaining to watch but when you see them running out in the open, you might be amazed with exactly how quick they are. They have short legs, but they can really get them moving fast. Even though they enjoy running outside, they can also do well in a city apartment, provided they get some physical activity on a regular basis. They will desire companionship at all times and will not do well if they are left alone for an extended amount of time.

If you are willing to put in the time and provide ongoing companionship, the Pembroke Welsh corgi will give you that companionship right back again. They can be a part of any family, large or small and will provide your home with a loyal companion.
